






January 30, 2002 - Link TV, the 24-hour television network with a global perspective on news, events and culture, is offering special programming in response to events surrounding the annual World Economic Forum in New York and the 2nd annual World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil. On Saturday, February 2 at 4:00 PM ET (1:00 PM PT) WorldLink presents
a series of live reports from the annual World Economic Forum in New York
City and the 2nd Annual World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Hosting
the program from the WorldLink studios is Nicole Sawaya who is joined
by Walter Andersen, author of "All Connected: Life in the First Global
Civilization."
In Porto Alegre, Patrice Barrat, the producer of the documentary "Globalization: Violence or Dialogue?", will be joined by participants in the World Social Forum and by Njoki Njehu of "50 Years is Enough," an organization dedicated to global economic justice. Laura Flanders of Working Assets Radio hosts from New York. Among her guests are Danny Schechter, Executive Editor of Mediachannel.org; Mike Dolan of Public Citizen and Chris Cuomo from "New Yorkers Say No to War.'

Labor Pains: Sweatshops and the Global Economy
At 7:00 PM ET (4:00 PM PT) on February 2nd, Link TV presents a call-in show
featuring a live link between delegates attending the World Social Forum in
Porto Alegre, Brazil, and guests at the Link TV studios in San Francisco. Participants
will include former sweatshop workers from around the world, anti-globalization
protesters and labor leaders. Link TV viewers will have the opportunity to phone
in the questions. The program will investigate globalization's impact on the
poor and women, child labor, and inform the audience on how to be a sweatshop-aware
consumer.
Joining host Nicole Sawaya at the WorldLink studios in San Francisco are Katie Quan, a lecturer on labor relations at UC Berkeley and former activist for UNITE, a garment industry union; and Chie Abad, a former sweatshop worker in Saipan and current activist for Global Exchange, a human rights organization. Appearing from Porto Alegre will be Martha Ojeda who spent 20 years working in Mexican maquilas near the U.S. border and is now Executive Director of the Coalition for Justice in the Maquiladoras; and Meena Menon, currently Vice President of the Mill Workers' Action Committee, one of India's most active textile workers' unions.
