The story of a tribe in the highlands of New Guinea and its ethnologist, Stphane Breton. This memorable film lays bare the complex and often awkward relationship between the camera-wielding anthropologist and his subjects. Over the years the Papua New Guineans attitude toward Breton has slowly moved from general mistrust (the adults didnt know what to make of him speaking like a child) to begrudging acceptance, but his role is still not defined. According to what interests them they cast me as a tradesman, friend, stranger, relative, observer or cash dispenser, says Breton, My position is unclear. Im a pain; someone who they never sent for, and who stubbornly sticks around for obscure reasons. I follow them everywhere. Ill wear them down in the end.
