Algeria
has one state-owned network, Enterprise Nationale de Television
(ENTV). Algerian
law prohibits private ownership of television stations, and the
government maintains strict control over all news broadcasts to
limit coverage of violence in the country. France-based European
channels and Arab satellite television stations have gained popularity
among Algerian viewers and satellite dishes are widely used.
The government has recently taken steps to reform ENTV. In December
2002, they signed an agreement with Khalifa TV, a privately-owned
Algerian station broadcasting out of Paris, to encourage collaboration
between the two stations and "open to ENTV other horizons of communications."
