New Music Video Blocks

This month, we're rolling out six new video blocks of vibrant World Music. In the past 2 weeks, we've aired #171, #172, #173 and #174. We continue this week with #170 and #175 which include artists such as Julieta Venegas (pictured), whose videos you'll find only on Link TV. Below are some liner note for these blocks provided by Michal Shapiro, our music programmer. If you have any questions or comments about these music blocks or other World Music artists, please write Michal Shapiro at [email protected].

Music Block 170 "Latin Passions"
Playlist and Broadcast Times
With so many romantic songs coming out of the Latin scene we thought we'd shine a light on some of its more topical and philosophical aspects. Both Kinky (Mexico) and Juan Luis Guerra (Domincan Republic) take on politiciansKinky directs their ire at the president and his vacillations, while Guerra sings African guitarist Diblo Diballa's more general indictment "El costo de la vida" about political oppression and lies. Mexico's Control Machete take on the topic of compulsive gambling and the ruin it causes, as well as the predatory casinos that exploit the disease. Brazil's Tom Ze has always been a performance artist at heart, and his "Politicar" about waste and greed is brilliantly eccentric. Our friends from Barcelona, Ojos de Brujo deliver an impassioned message of karmathat good is stronger than evil, and liars never win. We finish off with Mexico's Julieta Vanegas, in a wistful song that uses a walk as a metaphor for existence. As we walk we can share secrets, stories, or our lives.

Music Block 175 "International Rap"
Playlist and Broadcast Times
We check out several international mutations of the ever adaptable Rap in this block. In Brazil, it takes on a sunny, joyous beat as Rappin Hood and Leci Brandao (a noteworthy singer in her own right) deliver a history of Afro-Brazilian (and other) musical contributions. Then Gokh-bi and Tukuleur, both bands from Senegal contribute decidedly different takesGokh-bi's soulful griot style seamlessly blends rap with a message that is simultaneously pensive and positive. Tukouleur take Toto's international hit "Afrika" and take it quite literally back home. Hopping over to Trinidad, 3 Canal give us a demonstration of what they call "Rapso" a blend of Rap and Calypso. It's not such a far jump, as Calypso is by its own nature a format for topical subjects. Heading toward colder climbs, Tru Rez Crew, from the Six Nations Reservation in Canada deliver a tribute to aiming high, and the parents who support their efforts. For a truly zany number, we head back to Mexico where Skeey tips his hat to the classic "El Rancho Grande" with a rap that has him crying in his tequila about a hard-to get rancherita. We finish with Denmark's Outlandish, in a compelling fable about boyhood dreams versus the harsh realities of life.

I admire all of the people brave enough to have appeared in that film. That is when I made the decision to become a member of Link TV. No one is looking out for us except Michael Moore and you.
