Video of the Week

Artist: Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Song: "Long Walk to Freedom"
Country: South Africa

During the apartheid era, black workers in the South African mines lived in barracks provided by their white employers. A soft sort of a capella music was born there, out of a need to keep things quiet. This music was called Iscathamiya , and it became widely popular, with competitions drawing contestants from miles around. Ladysmith Black Mambazo won so many of these contests that they were eventually barred from competing. The group has shown remarkable longevity, rising above adversity to prominence in 1986 as the backing vocalists on "Graceland" and going on to singing behind Lifesavers commercials (and that's still them!). With the release of a new retrospective CD they are celebrating the emancipation of South Africa, and spreading a message of love, respect and peace. The video is an eloquent enactment of the band's --and South Africa's history.

It's so absolutely wonderful to turn on the most commercial of mediums and yet discover a channel that celebrates the rich diversity of cultures and traditions other than our own. YAY! And to experience the authentic music and dance is truly uplifting and lovely! Many big smiles when I watch LinkTV..... Thank you thank you thank you!

... When Al Gore and buddies bought the Canadian Newsworld International channel, and changed programming to airhead teenies boppers, I was so mad that I almost dumped satellite TV entirely. LINK saved my day! I do miss Helen Mann--prettiest girl on TV any where. If I were 40 years younger, twice as good-looking as I actually am, and twice as rich, I'd go questing in the north. (And if wishes were horses, beggars would ride.) So I gratefully settle for Amy's competence and happily plod on.

What a wonderful program! A program that takes you all over around the globe while you are seating at home. I hate changing channels once I begin watching Link TV
