Video of the Week

Artist: Kvety
Song: "Pasacek Ovci (Sheep Herder)"
Country: Czech Republic

View This Video Now!

Here's an oddball video and another fascinating entry for the Czech Republic. Kvety is an acoustic ensemble but with their combination of mandolins, balofon, harmonica, cello and a host of other instruments they are nonetheless considered to be an Alternative band.

The song is about an obsessive inescapable love. "I can do anything what I want, when you are away. But all ways lead to you, I see you everywhere, the clouds are as your hair." The unusual feeling of the video is accomplished with individual light treatments to each frame, giving it a vintage flickering effect. The bra-bound beauty is the only non band member in the video. The visual style is impossible to categorize -- in the words of one band member: "Director Petr Hegyi is a very strange person."

Just wanted to let you how much my husband and I appreciated the "Being Caribou" program. The filmmakers movingly conveyed the beauty, strength and fragility of these amazing animals. I must tell you that while we were watching the program, we noticed our Bengal cat, Macon, sitting in front of the television. We gave him a bench to sit on and he watched in fascination for about 30 minutes, reaching up with his paw again and again to try to touch the running caribou on the screen. This is more than a cute story; any film that can mesmerize a cat must really have done a wonderful job of bringing the wilderness into viewers' living rooms! Again, thanks for the great film. It left us motivated to become more politically active on behalf of the caribou and other endangered species.

I am surprised always by the lack of global programming available in the US. Considering our position as the leading world power(?). I find interest in world issues lacking and therefore understanding the world outside our borders lacking.I applaud you for the gift you bring in your exceptional programming. I watch regularly in fact, looking forward to your program tonight on China...
