Program Highlights

International Dateline: New Orleans Blues
More Information and Broadcast Times
Dateline returns for a new season with this searing report on the political and social fallout from Hurricane Katrina. Five months after the storm devastated New Orleans, the rebuilding of the city is opening deep racial scars that threaten the stability of this diverse icon of the American South. While wealthy white suburbs have power and water and residents returning, poor black suburbs like the Lower 9th Ward are virtually unchanged since Katrina swept through. The streets are still littered with rubble, bodies are still being discovered.

Vieques: Worth Every Bit of Struggle
More Information and Broadcast Times
Once a tropical paradise, the island of Vieques off the coast of Puerto Rico was expropriated by the U.S.Navy in the 1940's. Many of its pristine beaches became launching sites to test explosive weaponry. Inhabitants were moved, their homes razed, to make room for the naval base. The US ignored the complaints of the residents who were being poisoned by fall-out and deafened by explosions. This documentary maps the 60-year struggle between the inhabitants of Vieques island and the U.S. for just compensation.

In Focus: The End of Family?
More Information and Broadcast Times
Lino, Stine and Nele are siblings but they all have different fathers. Are they still a "family"? Are they merely people who happen to be living together, but may soon be going their separate ways? Families like those of Lino and Marie are increasingly common. In Germany, these so-called "patchwork families" now make up 15 percentof all families.

Video of the Week

Artist: DEBU
Song: "Mazhab Cinta" (The Path of Love)
Country: Indonesia

View This Video Now!

DEBU is a nineteen member ensemble from Indonesia, Sweden, England, the US and Malaysia. But all of them would say that they are one big family, and the music they create is inspired by the Sufi tenets of Love and Godliness. Starting out in Jakarta, they moved to Sulawesi and then to back to the capitol, where they are now a popular musical presence. The video is a sincerely sweet, if spacey paean to the power of Love. And while jaded western audiences might find it retro, in Indonesia those visual effects are considered quite cutting edge!
