Who Speaks For Islam?

On Saturday, February 5th at 10PM ET (7PM PT), a new Link TV television program, Who Speaks for Islam?, will will explore Islam in an age when Muslim extremists are laying claim to the religion. Veteran NPR and PBS journalist, Ray Suarez, hosts a provocative roundtable discussion with American Muslim scholars and, via satellite, Mike Scheuer, a CIA expert who has followed fundamentalist Islamic movements for a decade. The program will give Americans the opportunity to hear rarely-heard Muslim voices, including Shaykh Muhammad Tantawi (pictured), Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the first prominent Shaykh to speak out against Bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks.

Video pieces from the Middle East will be interwoven throughout the program to give viewers a political and cultural context. The one-hour discussion will be preceeded by Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet, a 2-hour documentary about the 7th century prophet who changed world history. By airing this historical documentary in tandem with a discussion about the struggle within modern-day Islam, Link TV seeks to shine a light on a religion that is often misunderstood in the United States. Look for more details on our website in the coming weeks.

Program Highlights

Jeremy Rifkin: European Dream
More Information and Broadcast Times
An exploration of the theories of social thinker Jeremy Rifkin, whose recent book, The European Dream: How Europe's Vision of the Future Is Quietly Eclipsing the American Dream, postulates that the The American Dream is in decline. Americans are increasingly overworked, underpaid, and squeezed for time. But there is an alternative: the European Dream - a more leisurely, healthy, prosperous, and sustainable way of life. Europe's lifestyle is not only more desirable, argues Rifkin, but may be crucial to sustaining prosperity in the new era.

In Focus: An Eye For An Eye
More Information and Broadcast Times
A Deutsche Welle special report on the 20-year history of secret negotiations between Germany, Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based terrorist organization, over the exchange of prisoners and agents.

In Focus: In A New Land
More Information and Broadcast Times
A Deutsche Welle profile of Rodolfo Stavenhagen who was selected in 2001 from a pool of applicants, including more than 20 Nobel prizewinners, as the first U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous People. Since then, the 70-year-old anthropology professor has been visiting Native American tribes in Mexico and South America, Bushmen tribes in Africa, and Eskimos, among others. He reports regularly to the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva on the problems of the different groups.

Video of the Week

Artist: Macaco
Song: "Giratuto"

Country: Spain

In the past few years musicians from Spain have been gathering up the myriad strands of the Spanish musical diaspora into a new hybrid, called "mestizo" music. Once the term was specific to Latin America, now in the hands of such eclectic radicals as Ojos de Brujo, Dusminguet and Macaco, it means a freewheeling blend of all that and including the influences of Spanish music, from the North African to the Catalan. Macaco's "Giratuto" is a laid back song with a "Latin" feel. But its musical provenance is hard to pin down. The video, with its miraculous metamorphosis machine mirrors the song's lyrics about the importance of aspirationthere is pain in life but hope will help you grow wings.

As a music teacher in Seattle Public Schools (Seattle, WA) I especially appreciate your cultural context offered for music videos especially appreciate your cultural context offered for music videos on your network. The context you provide is complete: social, ecological, economic, psychological, etc. when taken as a network in total.

I saw a portion of Underground Orchestra and was absolutely spellbound. What a wonderful, moving program. The music was haunting! I hope you will rebroadcast this progam - many times! I enjoy all of the programming of Link TV. It was the election "season" that moved me to stop watching network TV or at least dramatically cut down watching it and watch more of Link TV. I love Democracy Now.
