Program Highlights

The Teacher
More Information and Broadcast Times
"The Teacher" takes the viewer on a colourful and reflective journey revealing the rich teachings of the Dalai Lama against the dramatic backdrop of the Himalayas. The film features archive footage of the 1959 uprising in Lhasa, Tibet and the destruction of Buddist temples and monasteries in 1977 and also exclusive interviews with the Dalai Lama and other leading religious figures who promote East/West spiritual dialogue.

Flip Flotsam
More Information and Broadcast Times
This beautifully photographed, charming documentary traces the fantastic journey of Africa's most popular shoes: the flip-flop. Easily bought, quickly discarded, for Westerners the flip-flop stands as a symbol of the summer holiday. But in its African homeland, it has a unique life cycle and their story reveals much about Africa's economy and culture.

Who Speaks For Islam?
More Information and Broadcast Times
A Link TV original production that explores Islam in an age when Muslim extremists are laying claim to the religion. Veteran NPR and PBS journalist, Ray Suarez, hosts a provocative roundtable discussion with American Muslim scholars and, via satellite, Mike Scheuer, author of Imperial Hubris and a former CIA expert who has followed fundamentalist Islamic movements for a decade. The program gives Americans the opportunity to hear rarely-heard Muslim voices, including Shaykh Muhammad Tantawi, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the first prominent Shaykh to speak out against Bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks. Video pieces from the Middle East are interwoven throughout the program to give viewers a political and cultural context.

Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet
More Information and Broadcast Times
The story of the seventh century prophet who changed world history in 23 years and continues to shape the lives of more than 1.2 billion people. Three years in the making, this film takes viewers not only to ancient Middle Eastern sites where Muhammad's story unfolds, but into the homes, mosques and workplaces of some of America's estimated seven million Muslims to discover the many ways in which they follow Muhammad's example. The film is narrated by Andre Braugher.

Video of the Week

Artist: Tom Kočko & Orchestra
Song: "To Dance!" (Do tanca!)

Country: Czech Republic
Official Website

This video certainly reminds us that at one point in time pre-Christian Europe was inhabited by tribes that worshipped the earth and its cycles of life and fertility, and a maypole dance was an opportunity to let all inhibitions go and celebrate it. Tom Kočko has been mining the vein of Moravian folk songs and updating them. It's a rich archive indeed - the work of Dvorak and Janček showcases this heritage, and serves to highlight the tremendous debt that classical music owes to central European folk music. Kočko has scored this piece with jews harp, bagpipes and shepherd's flute, retaining both the folk flavor of the beautiful modal melody, and the wild pagan abandon of a midsummer maypole dance.
