New World Music Blocks!

Music Block 185: Visions
Broadcast Times

The use of computerized effects and animations has grown more widespread in video productions giving directors greater creative freedom. The Warsaw Village Band (pictured) present an entire mini-drama with stop action puppets to illustrate (and update) a folk song about the difficulties of relationships, interspersed with jumpy edits of live performance. Maya Arulpragasam (aka M.I.A.) is an art student as well as an up and coming pop star, and she painted all the colorful animations that form the matrix for "Galang" in which her image is embedded. The tiger is most probably a reference to the Sri Lankan rebel group the Tamil Tigers; in which M.I.A.'s father was heavily involved. While the Latin Cyberpunk band Polvorosa is based in Barcelona, they are actually two Germans and one Chilean. (Who had the distinction of being in a subversive band called "Los Pinochet Boys.") Directed by Martin Persiel, "El Amor Se Demora" is a combination of photo images and computer generated animation, creating a video collage that's a treat for the ears and eyes. "Boomerang" by Senegalese hip hop band Daara J describes the journey of music from Africa to the USA and back again, like a boomerang. The video is an appropriate mix of African ethnic and hi-tech images. Next the Czech band Cankisou takes us on a hallucinatory trip reminiscent of 60's psychedelia, with "Anay Yo," one man's journey to commune with crows. Mad horn lines riff alongside a Native American chant, birds and people fuse into one another, and it all ends on the subway. Don't ask. We close with a devilish, entry from Juanes. Religious fanatics have frequently demonized music's power to control or move people, and this video goes one step better. Juanes and company roll into town, the music starts, and people disappear -- but not before they are trapped in a visual wave of cumbia!

Music Block 186: Traditions and Fusions
Broadcast Times

It is always dangerous terrain to talk about "tradition" as if it were a fixed thing, allowing for no change. In this block we see examples of folk forms that are presented either close to their roots, or in tandem with other musical styles. Amadou and Mariam are from Mali, and while there has been a lot of talk about how closely Malian music resembles American Blues, in this case, Amadou paid his dues learning Rock and R&B; and playing it in Malian clubs. To add to the potpourri, this track "La Realit" was produced by Manu Chao, who adds yet another layer of his own. Jamaican singer-songwriter Abdel Wright comes out of the reggae and toasting traditions, but has added his own brand of troubadour style. And while Martires del Compas may be grounded in flamenco there is a distinctive punk edge to the lead vocals and none of the charactaristic melisma. Going further into fusion territory, Fiamma Fumana (pictured) from Italy put traditional songs from the north of Italy and specifically Emilia Romagna into a blender with accordions, bagpipes and synthesizers to come up with their personal and distinctively updated folk fusion, in "1.0". And in our first entry from a Kurdish band, the Kamkars, a family band that is tremendously popular in Iran sing "Ghazem Khan" a rousing folk song in front of the Nobel Peace Prize Awards audience. We finish out with a magnificent a capella song from the Oysterband, with contributing vocals from Brit-folk diva June Tabor. "Bright Morning Star" is one of those great melodies that can be sung solo, or in this case fleshed out gloriously with lush part singing, recalling both English church hymns and American sacred harp songs.

Video of the Week

Artist: Amadou and Mariam
Song: "La Realit"
Country: Mali

View This Video Now!

With "La Realit" Amadou and Mariam have written a song that seems contradictory --rousing dance to fatalism. The lyric: "some will live, others will die, while some will laugh, others will cry-- while some will sleep, others must be vigilant, and that's reality," is set in a minor mode, and yet this is toe-tapping stuff, with Amadou showing off his blues chops, and urging everyone to dance. The video itself is a star studded affair, set in a suburb of France, where we find Manu Chao, Ivory Coast Reggae star Tiken Ja Fakoly, French actor Vincent Cassel, Writer, boxer and actor Rachid Djadani, and Rapper Doudou Masta (of hip hop band 113), all swarming around a combination hair salon and general bootleg merchandise store. In hindsight there is irony in this video -- Rachid Djadani made his reputation writing about the unrest in the Parisian suburbs. And while Amadou may not have had immigrant discontent in mind when he wrote the song, the video certainly seems somewhat prescient.
